Volunteers, please review this document before every rotation!
- Do have two volunteers present at the Host site at all times.
- Do have two volunteers present in any room while providing childcare for parenting classes.
- Do be flexible.
- School activities, work and transportation schedules do not always fit the expectations of hosts perfectly. There are lots of moving parts in Family Promise, so flexibility is key.
- Do introduce yourself.
- Do greet and address guests by name.
- Do allow guests to open themselves up to you.
- Do listen.
- Do respect their boundaries.
- Do pay attention to all guests, not just the amiable ones.
- Do respect the parent’s authority.
- Do go through your volunteer coordinator when you want to give a gift. Do communicate with your volunteer coordinator.
- Do remember that someone is always listening.
- Do treat everyone the same as you would treat a friend or a coworker, regardless of their current circumstances.
- Do pray for the guests.Do offer grace and encouragement to the guests.
- Do play with the kids.
- Do involve the guests – cleaning up dinner, conversations, playing with kids, etc.
- Do not pry: Do not ask about where they’re from.
- Do not ask how they came to be homeless
- Do not ask about family
- Do not ask about jobs, past or present
- Do not contradict the parents.
- Do not touch guests for any reason without parents’ clear permission.
- Do not give our private phone numbers.
- Do not give guests a ride in your personal vehicle.
- Do not give gifts or cash directly to a family or an individual.
- Do not push your beliefs/faith on the guests.
