The Light – July 12

Sunday Morning Worship

As you probably know, University Friends Meeting has been closed on Sunday mornings since March 15, with live streaming most Sundays.

We have been talking about reopening on July 12, but with the current state of the pandemic, Ministry and Counsel folks have decided not to proceed with those plans and to remain closed through the end of July. It’s not a happy choice, but it does seem wise at this point.

We will continue live streaming worship for the foreseeable future and will look forward to “seeing” you live at 10:00 a.m. Sunday mornings on Facebook.  A video and text are available for viewing and reading at your convenience.

Questions and suggestions are welcome as we seek clarity on the way forward.  Prayers too.

Stay safe.  Wear a mask.  Wash your hands.  Know that God loves you.

🤗

Light and life,

Catherine

The church office will be closed Friday July 17th!

Family Promise

Thank you every one that helped with and supported Family Promise this past week.

You are very much appreciated!

EFC-MAYM Update

Please make plans now to join Evangelical Friends Church Mid-America Yearly Meeting (EFC-MAYM) for the very first fully online gathering of representatives from all across EFC-MAYM.  The theme for this year’s conference, scheduled for July 24-26, is “Entertaining Angels: Walking in the Way of Hospitality” (cf. Gen 18:1-8 & Heb 13:2).  Our special guest speaker will be Dan Kimball, founding pastor of Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, CA, where he continues to serve as director of mission and leadership. The cost of this year’s Ministry Conference will be just $20 per person.

(Every participant must register online by July 20th). Registrants will be instructed to send their payments to their local church office.  If you do plan to register, please send your check to University Friends Church Office at 1840 University, Wichita, KS 67213 (No later than Wed July 22nd).

The finalization of University Friend’s separation will take place during the 3:00pm Representatives’s Gathering via Zoom.

We have Our Daily Bread copies in the office if you would like to pick up or have us mail to you.  There are regular size and mini ones available. Please let Sandy know.

Just a reminder

The all-church retreat with Colin Saxton has been rescheduled. Again. (I know.) We are now aiming for the weekend of

August 28-30.   Timing of the retreat depends on how things are with the pandemic here in Wichita as well as on Everence’s policy about letting their employees travel.

The retreat will aim to come to greater clarity on God’s call for the future of University Friends Meeting.  Colin plans to meet via Zoom with the Transition Team on June 29th, and we are looking at ways to help us as a congregation to prepare for the retreat.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to complete this survey:  https://forms.gle/8PPUoChE78HKtKBS

The Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m., the 2nd and 4th Tuesday’s of each month.  Join us in the church library or on Zoom.  This month, Tuesday, July 14, the discussion will be over (chapters 7-18) in For Everything A Season by Phil Gulley.  If you would like to attend via Zoom, please email Catherine at orcagriffith@yahoo.com, and she will send you an email invitation.

Everence to hold Medicare webinar

Everence will host its popular workshop, Make Medicare an easy step, as a webinar on Tuesday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about the various Medicare plans and what they cover; plans that supplement Medicare; and enrollment details and deadlines. This webinar is free. Please register by contacting Darlene Buller at 877-467-7294, 316-333-1808 or darlene.buller@everence.com.

*Attendance is recommended for those approaching retirement or those ready to sign up for Medicare.

Prayer Requests & Concerns

Gordon Smith is still in the hospital receiving high-powered antibiotics to deal with pneumonia and a urinary tract infection. Plans are that, when that treatment concludes (maybe as early as Friday, July 10), he will be going home and receiving rehab through home health services.

Our church during this time of transition – may we find clarity and energy for the tasks at hand and the decisions we will need to make as we find our way forward.   May we find ways to use our assets wisely and well. Thanks! Catherine
