GATHER FOR PRAYER WITNESS

Great Plains Yearly Meeting is sponsoring two events in response to the violence and darkness threatening our lives.

If you feel led to share a prayer, scripture or focusing song at either gathering, you are welcome. If you know ahead, please contact LaVonna Loesch (lavonna.loesch@gmail.com).

1st Event – In Person Prayer Witness to the Light of Christ

When: Sunday, January 17, 2021, 5:30-6:15pm

Location: the front steps of University Friends – 1840 W. University

Bring: Hearts of Love & Light, sources of light (Coleman lanterns, candles, flashlights etc.), and lawn chairs if desired

Covid protocols required: masks and distancing

All are welcome, including Friends across the Wichita area who need this sacred space of expression.

2nd Event – Online Prayer Witness to the Light of Christ

When: Tuesday, January 19, 2021, 7:00pm-7:45pm

Host: LaVonna Loesch, GPYM Presiding Clerk

Location: Zoom, invitation forthcoming

Bring: Hearts of Love & Light

All are welcome, including GPYM Monthly Meetings & any Friends who need this sacred space to sit in the presence of the Divine.

At least in part, the planning of these events was prompted by a post on Facebook by Colin Saxton, who will be the speaker at both University Friends’ all-church retreat the weekend of February 5-7 and at Great Plains Yearly Meeting 2021 sessions:

Most of you who are my Facebook friends spend every day proclaiming and demonstrating God’s peace, justice and grace in ordinary and extraordinary ways. Thank you. In large part this is all we can do and what we are called to do…every single day.

Given the reports of possible violence and overt confrontation around the US on January 20, I am wondering what we may each and all be called to do that day? How might those of us who follow the Prince of Peace be used as a sign and witness to a Kingdom that is not of this world? ~ posted 1-11-21

January 31 – February 7 we have the privilege of supporting one family in a homeless situation along with our support church, Crossroads Friends Church, and host, Pathway Church. Pathway is having a normal hosting week with on-location volunteering (socially distanced, with masks). I understand that, like me, many of our congregants do not feel safe going into this situation yet; COVID numbers are still high and we don’t want to endanger the lives of the family or the many volunteers they come in contact with. However, if you’re still open to helping Pathway in person, you are welcome to sign up. They also have sign-up slots for dedicated prayer support. 🙂

Training is a requirement and assures consistent care and regard for the families we serve. Refresher training is required yearly and is available online Friday, January 29 at noon. Initial training for new volunteers is online Sunday, January 31, 1 pm. Sign up here and invite family and friends to join you in serving our community.

If you have specific questions or you may contact me anytime.  316-200-4045 or degrootwolfe@gmail.com

Thank you for being a part of Family Promise!

Your Coordinator, Erin DeGroot

Preparing for an All-Church Retreat

In our time of transition, we are seeking to answer these questions: Who are we? Who are our neighbors? To what is God calling us?

What would it mean for us to join God’s work in our community, in our time?

How can we be better stewards of our assets, in terms of people, facilities, and money?

What is God calling us to be and do?

Remember to pray earnestly and often for our church.

Hold these Dates: February 5-7

Prayer and Study

You are invited to join this small conversation group using a book or resource related to prayer.  The group will then devote 20-30 minutes at closing, praying either vocally or silently, for the many needs close to us or in the larger communities and world in which we live.  The group will be marked by listening, conversation and holding the space reflectively in God’s presence.

Our first book resource will be A Sunlit Absence: Silence, Awareness, and Contemplation by Martin Laird.  I read Laird’s first book Into the Silent Land and through its reading developed a real appreciation for his lack of cliches about prayer, his insistence that we are not separate from God and an approach to prayer that invites us to a deeper experience of listening to the one who proceeds our awareness and attention.

Please contact us with any questions or let us know if you have an interest in participating.  The book may be purchased through Amazon or at your favorite book outlet.

Facilitators:  Carol and Randy Mullikin

When:         1st and 3rd Wednesdays, 6:30 pm, beginning February 17 through May 19, 2021

Includes the following dates: February 17, March 3 and 17, April 7 and 21, May 5 and 19.

Where:          via ZOOM (the recurring Zoom invitation should work for all gatherings; see below)

Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85783778187?pwd=SGpCR2FTcnRvZU8rT2FzRVRVWEJjdz09

With clarity and grace Laird shows how we can move away from identifying with our turbulent, every-changing thoughts and emotions to the cultivation of a “sunlit absence” – the luminous awareness in which God’s presence can most profoundly be felt.   – A Sunlit Absence

Let’s Pray Together, Remotely

Friends,

Ministry & Counsel would like to welcome you to participate in regularly scheduled, remote prayer meetings set to begin this week.  May these times invigorate our faith and prayer life, and help us to connect with one another, the Meeting, and our mission.

Volunteer hosts have appointed twenty to thirty minutes of their week toward prayer and meditation on the Meeting, its present concerns, and its future.  You are invited to join in prayer at the appointed time from wherever you find yourself at that moment.  If you would prefer a more connected sense during these appointed times of prayerful consideration, hosts will also provide Zoom links so that our communion might be more apparent, though still remote.

You can find the scheduled prayer times in The Light This Week, on wichitaquakers.org and as events within the UFM Private Facebook group, and Zoom meeting links will be available there too.

At present, opportunities are Mondays at noon with Sue Wine and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. with Kim Edgington-Keehn.

If you are interested in hosting an appointed time of prayer, please contact Michael at TheMBarrett@gmail.com.

CONDOLENCES

It is with heartfelt sadness we would like to inform you of the passing of David McDonald. He went to be with ourSavior on Saturday afternoon January 9th. He was not in pain in his last hours; and Beth, Ryan, and his brother Rich were able to be by his side.

Though this is an immensely difficult time for our family, we feel comforted knowing that David is no longer suffering and is in a peaceful home with God.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of our beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather will be held January 30, 2021 at 2 PM at University Friends Church 1840 W University St. Wichita Ks. 67213.  The service will follow CDC guidelines and will also be live streamed from the church website. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to University Friends Church or Victory in the Valley, Inc.

PRAYER REQUESTS AND CONCERNS.

  • Sherry Johnson dealing with advanced cancer
  • The McDonald family
  • Our country at this time of a transfer of power
  • Our community as it deals with the pandemic

·         Our church during this time of transition – May we find clarity and energy for the tasks at hand and the decisions we will need to make as we find our way forward.   May we find ways to use our assets wisely and well.  May we discover ways we are to be a beacon of love in our world. May we be looking for the doors God is opening, and may we have the courage to walk through them.
