“Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”

1. Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.

“One Candle is Lit”

Come surely, Lord Jesus, as dawn follows night,
our hearts long to greet you, as roses, the light.
Salvation, draw near us, our vision engage.
One candle is lit for the hope of the age.

Missions giving for December: Share the Season

  • Share the Season (STS) is a special program providing help and hope to those in need in Sedgwick County during the holiday season.
  • Families who do not qualify for other indigent programs apply for assistance and are screened carefully by the Salvation Army personnel to verify needs.
  • Each family can receive one-time assistance for needs such as utilities, paying medical bills, etc.
  • Payments are made directly to vendors, such as the bank or utility company.
  • The Wichita Community Foundation handles all donations and issues receipts to all who contribute.
  • STS works in the best possible way, directly reaching those in need and encouraging our community to be charitable.

          Thank you, from Andrea Suttle

Listening Groups: Preparing for an All-Church Retreat

The second Listening Groups Summary: Reflection on Survey Results went out over email on November 17. Listening Group Update 1: Pin Map & Survey Results is also available.

If you would like a copy and did not receive one, please reply to this email and request one.

In our time of transition, we are seeking to answer these questions: Who are we? Who are our neighbors? To what is God calling us?

These Listening Group conversations are crucial as we consider questions related to the future of University Friends Meeting. Please keep them in your prayers.

What would it mean for us to join God’s work in our community, in our time?

How can we be better stewards of our assets, in terms of people, facilities, and money?

What is God calling us to be and do?

Remember to pray earnestly and often for our church.

The Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m., the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.  If you would like to join via Zoom, please email Catherine at orcagriffith@yahoo.com and she will send you an invitation.  Everyone is welcome!  On Tuesday, December 8, the Book Club plans to discuss Anne Lamott’s Traveling Mercies:  Some Thoughts on Faith, (pages 59 through 114).

Prayer Requests & Concerns

·         Steve Grether as he recuperates from having his leg amputated.

·         Linda Mallonee for general healing all over.

·         School boards, teachers, administrators, staff, students and families as they cope with rising pandemic numbers

·         Our church during this time of transition – May we find clarity and energy for the tasks at hand and the decisions we will need to make as we find our way forward.   May we find ways to use our assets wisely and well.  May we discover ways we are to be a beacon of love in our world. May we be looking for the doors God is opening, and may we have the courage to walk through them.

“Christmas Carol” Coming to a Zoom Screen Near You!

Zoom Radio Hour, under the guidance of Sue Wine, announces the presentation of a readers’ theater version of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol,” featuring Vonda Schuster as Scrooge. Tune in via Zoom at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 20.

Enjoy dinner theater?   This could be a do-it-yourself lunch theater – just get some lunch to have while you enjoy the performance from your very own home.  And wouldn’t a festive beverage be nice with that lunch?  RSVP by December 14 to receive a packet that will turn your mug of hot milk into hot chocolate (no-contact delivery, free of charge).

Is “A Christmas Carol” a part of the holiday season that you simply don’t want to miss?  This might be just your cup of tea (or hot chocolate).

Would you like to be one of the readers?  If you have access to good Wi-Fi, this could be your chance!   A limited number of roles are still available.  Contact Sue Wine right away (suewine427@gmail.com or 785-220-9898) to let her know you would like to play a part.

Intrigued?  We’re hoping it could be more fun than Monthly Meeting. 😉 Put the Zoom Radio Hour on your calendar for 11:30 a.m. on December 20, and we’ll send out a link later.

Friends University is Looking at our Building

On Thursday, November 19, folks from Friends University – President Amy Carey, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Kevin Hoppock, and Vice President of Finance Vernon Dolezal – presented a proposal for their use of our building to our Assets Committee.

In terms of possibilities, Friends University is looking at the building for short- and long-term use:

·         A home for visual arts

·         A setting for recitals, concerts, and other events

·         Space for campus ministry to have worship and fellowship, dedicated sacred space

·         A place for their new wrestling program

In terms of investments, the university is looking at these:

·         Upgrading the heating and air conditioning systems

·         Long-term maintenance

·         Accessibility, including an elevator in the east wing

·         Deferred maintenance and restoration

Friends University folks also affirmed shared usage of the facility with University Friends, in line with what was described in the document we discussed at November’s Monthly Meeting – some shared usage, some designated space for the church.

The Assets Committee indicated support for the proposal in general and raised some concerns about specifics.  Friends University anticipates bringing us a revised proposal soon.  We have scheduled a threshing meeting – a time when we can talk about this proposal without the pressure to make a decision – for December 13, 1:00 p.m.  This will be a Zoom meeting, because we are under a pandemic, and President Cary offered us the use of the President’s Dining Room, which is set up so that we can have a Zoom meeting where everyone can hear.

We will send out the revised proposal as soon as we have it.  If we don’t get the revised proposal in time for people to review it before the threshing meeting, we will reschedule the threshing meeting.

·         Please put December 13, 1:00 p.m., on your calendar.

·         Please also hold this meeting and this process in your prayers.

Thank you!

Catherine Griffith

Intentional Interim Minister

University Friends Church
